Margaret Carriedo (Maggie) of Chula Vista, CA passed away on Friday August 4 at age 93.
She was born on October 8, 1923 in San Bernardino, California to Porfiria and Andres Rangel, from Guanajuato, Mexico. She was raised in Logan Heights, attending Sherman Elementary and Memorial Junior High School. In her teens Margaret lived with her beloved sister Andrea in San Diego. Margaret began working at the age of 12 holding various jobs, including as a restaurant waitress, as a domestic, at the fish canneries and chili factories and in the dry cleaners.
She was married to Lorenzo Carriedo on June 15, 1941 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Margaret and Lorenzo took in nieces and nephews into their home in time of need. Margaret also became the ultimate tennis mom, watching her sons compete at Morley Field or throughout the state, often with another child in her arms.
Despite their humble background, Margaret and Lorenzo instilled in their children a respect for hard work, integrity and education. Through her example Margaret also inspired in them a strong sense of family unity. Christmas gatherings at her home were magical; she loved making tamales and enchiladas, was meticulous in her decorations, and especially cherished being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Margaret enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to visit Canada, Mexico, England, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, and other European countries! She attended three Olympics: Mexico City in 1968, Los Angeles in 1984, and Barcelona in 1992. She attended Wimbledon in England and watched Chris Evert play in 1987.
Later in life, Margaret discovered the joy of Las Vegas and Viejas Casino and invested weekly in her lottery tickets.
Margaret is survived by her sons Marcos, Ruben, Carlos and Robert, by her daughters Cristina and Maria, by their spouses and by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenzo, by her brothers Pedro and Ignacio and by her sisters, Andrea, Lucy, Tillie, and Eleanor.
